The Creed of Tolerancy

When we went for that vacation to Tarkarli, we had been warned by her dad to be careful, to be wary of the Shiv Sainiks and other fundamentalist Hindu groups who have been harassing yougsters in many parts of the country. The reason for harassment could be anything from celebrating Valentine's Day (which I personally find quite stupid, but no reason to harass anyone for) to getting 'intimate' in public (warped as their insanely narrow definition of 'intimate' may be), or even standing in too much proximity if the twosome in question happen to not be entangled in the ties of matrimony. The fact that the weekend we went on holiday also happened to accommodate Valentine's Day only heightened her dad's concerns.

So it was no surprise when a cop we were asking for directions started questioning me as to why I was driving topless. The aircon in the car was on, I was shirt-less and yet, I was sweating. And I pointed out as much to the cop, who to my mild surprise, looked us over once, said to himself more than to us that we were on holiday and pointed us on our way.

Anyway, some days back, MF Husain was trying to decide whether to give up his Indian citizenship and become a national of Qatar instead, the country he has been living in ever since his self-imposed exile triggered by the many threats issued against him. These threats, not very different from the fatwa issued by the Ayotallah against Salman Rushdie, were set out by fundamentalist Hindu groups whose fanaticism led them to proclaim his paintings of Hindu goddesses and Mother India as obscene and hence making him worthy of premature death.

This is not about raking up the issue however. I saw this bit on one of the gazillion TV screens in the office and casually remarked to a colleague about how I thought it was fucked up. The response was "It's a good thing only, that fucker should stay out". At my "What the...?!", the response changed. It went "Actually, no, he should come back. Else, how will we ever beat up the mother-fucker?"

When I argued about artistic freedom to interpret and the subjectivity of obscenity, I was told that I should respect other peoples' opinions, and to live and let live. Now that's rich, don't you think? I mean, how often do you get an intolerant cunt asking you to respect others' opinions? And this particular individual talking of obscenity? I mean, he is the kind of creep who stands on the office balcony looking down at women exercising a few floors below just so he can see some jiggling boobs. People like him brandishing intolerance for obscenity really takes the cake.

And oh, I also have a word for anyone talking about the zodiac. This arse-wipe and me share the same birthdate. And if anyone tells me (in person) that he and me are alike, be ready for a nice punch on the face. After all, a display of intolerance will only be fair, won't it?

tch tch! such a poor under the belt shot at astrology for no reason....perhaps the shared characteristic of your common birth date is not a propensity for artist-bashing but simply a flair to shock?

to be honest, i ve been debating on this issue inside my head since i read this news. ofcourse, inconclusively but this is as far as i have come. If you look around people in this world address issue of diverse opinions in two ways. One by self restraint like japan, most of europe and two by implementing strict laws like china, middle east (I think US falls in both catagories). the two have different feedback response in the first category the artist will come with an expression and ppl would choose to not respond to it and in the latar case the artist would not dare to come up with his expression. India is a complicated society where ppl like to express opions and law is not implemented strictly. I do think artistic freedom should not be confused with absolute blasphamy especially in a sensitive and an emotional country like ours.

the zodiac and astrology, though related, are not the same. the former is the generic based on the specifics of the former, so... and a flair to shock? well, i guess being a moron qualifies just as well, though there are too many around for it to have any real shock value.

shantanu, thanks for the typo correction :P. as for the issue of blasphemy in a sensitive country like ours, the diversity of religions is too vast to have a sensible and simple drawing of the line. i mean, depiction of other-worldly beings in the nude is a rather old tradition in these parts. even the supreme court had dismissed cases against husain by citing numerous temples as examples. and i am certain that many of those offended by these paintings haven't even seen those paintings ever.

the point i was trying to get at is that what he is doing after 95 years of existence he should have done much earlier.

you mean, decided to move to qatar? how would that solve any problem? on the one hand, we condone muslims getting pissed off about the danish newspaper cartoons, and on the other, we talk of emotional and sensitive?

i dont know what the majority opinion in india is on danish cartoons. i think as long as the cartoons are printed in his own country and he is protected by the law of the land he is free to do so. in our country law is not enforced strictly. and moving to Qatar would help him to draw whatever he wants since he holds that right above everything else. personally, i am OK with all his projections of hindu goddesses except laxmi whch i cant help to find distasteful.

this is exactly what hussain mf wants and gets....publicity for all the marketing gimmicks he pulls off coz frankly his art sucks ...by itself its barely good enuff to be in rich peoples drawing rooms..who cares qatar or no qatar.....if he goes im sure we wont miss his bit of tax money, if he stays news channels wont mind some extra masala for those dull newsless days...

Anon - i dont think man of his stature needs publicity and i dont agree his art is just about makes it to rich peoples drawing rooms. his career has spanned over 50 years and his work has been displayed in almost all the famous galleries. if people are offended they dont have the right to make his life miserable. ultimately he is leaving the country because he doesnt trust the agencies to provide him with the security.

people should be free to do what they want so long as their actions are not forced upon others. country, religion, gender, blah blah notwithstanding. don't like a film? don't watch it. don't listen to a song that offends you and don't fuck someone you find ugly. unless you want to. and if you want to, then shut up.
